ACCREDITED High School Programming
Mlkiknewawti Land-Based Education Program
Mlkiknewawti (mel-gig-new-oh-di) invites Indigenous youth to embark on a 10-day overnight, land-based learning experience. This program is accredited by the Nova Scotia Department of Education and participants have the opportunity to claim a high school credit upon completion.
Mlkiknewawti, which translates to “road of strength” in Mi’kmaq, is hosted by SuperNOVA in collaboration with Indigenous partners including Elders and Knowledge Keepers. This program centres community priorities and educational goals through engaging students in land-based activities. During Mlkiknewawti students explore STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) through a lens that blends Western science with Traditional Knowledge. This approach, known as Etuaptmumk (Two-Eyed Seeing), encourages students to explore STEM through impactful, hands-on, experiential learning while building real-world connections between themselves and STEM.
